Proud and Pride

Good eveningmy friends, we , the new generation of our great motherland, are you ready to face the trial and challenges of the new century? Are you eager to repay our grand nation? And how will you realize it?

I’m honored being here to give a lecture titled proud and pride to share my thinking about these questions.

A new red sun rises up from the remote east, enlightening a colorful age. The whole world is in a confirming march towards the peak of history, and China, doubtless is the very flat that is flowing highly above. 2009 is the thirtieth anniversary of reforming and opening up. Giant leaps springing up all the time are witnessed by countless achievements. When she stretches herself in the fresh air and sunlight of dawn, we can’t help but saying, China, I’m so proud of you!

I’m proud of your attractive civilization, your appealing scenery and you strengthened bones and muscles.

To be you children, we will make efforts to master more knowledge to arm ourselves.

To be you children, we will persevere at perfecting ourselves.

To be you children, we will absorb the remarkable legacies of the previous and summarize the former achievement to look forward from on the shoulder of giants.

Confucius had 7,000 students, why only did Mencius succeed him? So many people learn from Plato, why only did Aristotle stand out? Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety percent of perspiration. That tells us without perspiration inspiration can’t work at all. A skyscraper without foundations, does it exit? No need to say more.

To be you children, we will keep up with the pace of update and never fall behind.

To be you children, we will keep in mind that innovation is inexhaustible power forever.

To be you children, we will cultivate the ability to create and invent constantly.

Mayakovski said, I praise the current of the motherland, but to praise it three times in future. Milk from Mountain Kunlun and bread from the yellow soil feed Chinese people generation by generation. Industrious and courageous people struggle on this fertile land. Let alone 21st century belongs to China! How it worth fighting for her!

In the end, my friends, why not open arms, hug the time ,with hard work and innovation to promise a shinning future both for China and ourselves.

Today, we’re proud of china, the other day we are the pride of her!

That’s all. thank you.

Today it’s your answer!

If there is anyone out there who still holds the view that the post-80’s is a bunch of fragile little pot flowers in greenhouses, who still questions their ability to live up on their own, who still labels them as a group of selfish and self-interested chaps, tonight it’s your answer.

2008 witnessed perhaps the most severe earthquake in Chinese history. Wenchuan earthquake brought tremendous disasters to native citizens in term of casualties and destruction, but also proved that post 80’s is somewhat different from the conventional wisdom. Never have I realized that

their life has been closely bounded with our country. I remember that these young people were at the forefront of the rescue operation in quake-ravaged areas , donating money and materials, calling for more and more “post 80s” and “post 90s” to devote themselves to the disaster relief, screaming “come on! China”. These scenarios are very much alive, because they manifested the bravery, devotion, love, and patriotism that proudly cherished by us Chinese people.

Never have I realized our destinies are bounded with the times. But what times are we in? Charles Dickens wrote in A Tale of Two Cities “ It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” to vividly illustrate the contradictions in French Revolution. This description can be applied in the scenario today. Indeed, it is the worst of times. We’re stuck in the most severe financial crisis, with GDP growth declining, unemployment rate surging, resources price fluctuating, export volume plunging. But it is the best of times. Why? Because changing times calls for changing people, and I’m confident we can be the change.

But howI design some of the ways

Firstwe can change ourselves. This is a great time of being at school and making reflection of my life. Emerged in the business culture in UIBE for five years, it’s time to change the concept of applying what I’ve learned to real life. Being a routine white collar may be no exception for most of us, but why not give starting my own business a shot? All this requires is a little bit insight of combining learning and practice with the help of policy support. Long been branded as having grandiose aims but puny abilities, a college student should be down-to-earth. From 1990s, thousands of university student village officers have made great strides for village development, but also exercised their abilities to full extent. Their devotion, combined with clear and steady-going aims have made themselves better off. Aside from concept, we can change our action, from reducing consumption of disposable packages to involvement in using environmental-friendly products; tiny drops can change the environment awareness.

Second, we can change the community around us. Wenchuan earthquake and Beijing Olympic Game witnessed the surging of volunteer spirit, which is the key elements of pushing social progress in western countries, where college students is mainstay. They joined in different kinds of community service organizations and NGOs and make their endeavors endeavors to poverty relief, education, health care in the belief that their behavior is not a drop in the bucket but a stream, a torrent. In fact, I can see large sums of college students work themselves furiously into bringing talent to the society, including providing systematic business lessons to middle school students to promote economic awareness so that they can be better prepared for future life. One of my friends told me” By teaching to fish, you can change the lives of those around you, thus exert certain influence on a small community, it’s the most fulfilling thing in college life.” So if your talent can change a small community, why not give it a shot?

Last, I’m confident we can change the society. Changing times calls for changing people. It was in the Great Depression that Roosevelt adopted the schemes designed by economists of Keynes school. After consolidating the financial and restoring bank credit, adopting the "Agricultural Adjustment Act" and "national industrial rehabilitation law", American established a comprehensive social structure that sustain its development in the following years. It was in 1980’s,when open and reform policy was at its initial stage, that Lin Yifu developed his theory framework of price dualism, resource allocation, enterprise spontaneity ability to facilitate Chinese policy-decision for transformation. After 30 years of Open and Reform policy, today we’re at a critical juncture. Not only we’re faced with the shrinking foreign demand that cast heavy burden for GDP growth, but we’re in the crossroad for economic growth mode transformation and social problems with it. Problems such as social injustice, uneven development of regional economies, environmental pollution needs careful observation, thought and study. A lot of research teams consisting of college students scattered in different parts really have done wonderful jobs. They provide solutions for coal minerals in Shanxi; empirical study case in Suqian on reform of the medical care system; feasibility analysis on non-governmental finance.Compared to experts in certain areas, our voice may be mature or even naive, but our existence proved that we want to be contribution to social betterment.

Every man has a share of responsibility for the fate of his country. For our college students, we should prove by our respective deeds, that we are not a bunch of fragile pot flowers, but are a generation that can shoulder the huge responsibility of rejuvenating our country and show this to the elderly, to the more sophisticated and much wiser generation. Tonight it’s my answer! Thank you.

21st century patriotism of college students

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen! I remember in middle school, that’s pretty much when I first started learning English, we had a limerick among us fellow students: I fail in the English test, because I love my country I love my country, so I flunk my English. I guess some of you have the same experience as me and I’m quite sure nobody would hum this limerick any more. But why is English, because of globalization? Where’s globalization leading us? Those are the questions we need to think about, which is exactly why today I’m going to talk about 21st century patriotism of college students.

The seventeenth CPC National Congress puts forward the concept of scientific development which serves as the fundamental guideline to pursue advancement. I think the scientific concept of development can also be applied to shape college students’ patriotism. Take a look around us; it is not hard to spot two groups of people going extremes. One is hypocrites who passionately extol our national spirit but never actually take concrete measures, the other one is cynics who lament everything and desire a reclusive way of living. Patriotism, defined as love and devotion to one’s country, which has been practiced for thousands of years, now requires serious refinement.

First, let’s trace back in time. Confucianism values filial piety. Ancient Chinese are fully devoted to their parents and are taught to obey. Emperor is the Son of God and Father of citizens, therefore people are submissive to the rulers and all have a strong sense of patriotism. Somehow patriotism in antiquity is merely narrowed to domestic development and exclusion from outside world. And this has something to do with China’s geography and culture. So nobody is to blame, and there’s no finger-pointing. However, with the discovery of New Sea Routes and advancement of transportation, interactions between nations became frequent, Chinese emperor, proud of China’s rich culture and fertile resources, decided to seclude from countries that were unheard of, such as The Great Britain, at that time. Patriotism, because of this, acquires another pessimistic connotation.

Now, we all have realized it’s highly consequential to broaden the concept of patriotism. Patriotism is not only about protecting our country, but learning from others to enhance our own social well-being

However, we need to find balance between the two aspects of patriotism: conservatism and open-mindedness. On one hand, we should keep track of time, enlarge our vision, on the other, we shouldn’t lose ourselves with the fast pace of globalization.

But how should we college students hold the 21st century patriotism

Firstly, Love our tradition. Tradition is two-edged sword, if we see it through our critical eyes, it can strength our sense of belonging. In the frenzy age of modernization, we’re immersed in Hollywood blockbusters, Japanese animations, luxuries, and we feel tired. Ladies and gentlemen, at this rate, please turn to our roots, our tradition; it’s there where we sympathize, it’s there where we enjoy the tranquility, and it’s there we marvel at our ancestor’s wisdom and take pride in our country. Only in this way, when we revert to the frantic world, can we hold on to our spirits and never stray.

Then, I suggest we go out-go to another country. Culture is to us what water is to fish. When fish swims in the water, it can hardly realize the existence of water. Once it gets out, it will realize its deep attachment to water. In 2007, I paid a short visit to England and that was my first time to travel abroad. I have to say it is a most amazing experience for me. But it’s also my very first time to realize my connection with my motherland is so fervent and strong. Everything is different out there, and it makes me examine myself from a whole new perspective. I knew I wasn’t just myself at that time; I was with my country. So ladies and gentlemen, if you have the chance, go out. You will discover how much you love this land and how proud you are to be a Chinese.

On top of that, passion is another element in patriotism. It’s rare to feel Chinese people’s vehemence or passion. It’s not because we don’t have that, but because it’s too strong to reveal it. It’s there in the blood of revolutionaries who dedicated their noble lives to save our country from invasion and corruption. It’s there in the charisma and wisdom of the founding fathers of New China who led millions, billions of people out of war, pain, and sadness. It is there in the perspiration of generations of Chinese people who guards the right of their Mother and contributes their part to her who gives them flesh and blood.

So here, to those who sing our national anthem but never truly believe, it’s time to wake up from your bubble and start to contribute; to those who lose confidence when encountering obstacles in the process of our nation’s development, it’s time to rekindle your patriotism. When a butterfly is trying to break out from the cocoon, she is to struggle and feel pain. Paradise Lost by John Milton tells us it’s a heavenly process to heal the wounds of a secular world.

Embrace our country, embrace her charm, embrace her pain. Just like Aiqing’s poem says

Then I die, with my feather rotting away beneath the earth.

Why am I welled up in tears?

Because I love this land so deeply.

Scientific Development—Think Globally, Act Locally!

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, before we move on, please close your eyes. I’d like you to enjoy a song.

Now, open up your eyes. Yes, it is the theme song of the 29th Olympic Games. This song has an ultimate power in itself, for it brings you and me to meditate, and calms our souls. It tells us that maybe in the indifferent spaces of our hearts, we may even find room to dance again.

The heating opening ceremony is just like our passion for development, while the theme song tells us to cool down, and think carefully about our current situation.

Now, ladies and gentlemen, can you have a picture of modern life in your mind? Lots of hustle, bustle, traffic, pedestrians and skyscrapers. To most of us, the result of development is a bar of bittersweet chocolate. On the one hand, we are all smiles when enjoying its conveniences. On the other hand, we are always complaining when suffering from serious congestion, severe pollution, and high consumption.

Development is the priority to our Party in governing and rejuvenating the country. However, social problems are the twin sisters of development if we don’t pay attention to the way we build our country. So the scientific outlook on development should be our guideline in developing the nation.

Then, how can we college students contribute to our nation’s scientific development as individuals? In my view, we should think globally, but act locally, which is the key for us to contribute to the scientific development of our nation and even, the whole world.

It is easier said than done. We are complaining about the traffic, but how many of us are willing to give up driving? We are protesting against the polluted air, but how many of us are willing to go cycling? If we have time to whine and complain, then we have the time to do something.

Ancient Chinese scholars once noted that the ideal life of a virtuous man should follow the path of cultivating oneself, regulating the family, managing the nation, and establishing peace all over the world. Self-cultivation here means that first of all one needs to be a qualified college student if one wishes to be the backbone of the nation. It is the starting part for any glorious achievement. This is equally applicable for any of us who wishes to contribute to the scientific development.

We can begin our first step towards scientific development at any time and in any place, by protecting the local environment, by helping the poor, by teaching in remote areas, or even just by turning off the lights every time one leaves an empty room.

Let me give you an example, during the Olympic Games, an odd-and-even license plate rule has been announced to ease congestion and reduce pollution, which would allow the city’s 3.3 million private car owners to drive into the city only on alternate days. To my surprise and delight, these measures met with no complaints. That’s how we can help scientific development come true: from the tiniest incidents in our daily life to the profound changes in our loving nation.

In the blazing August, I offered services to visitors at home and abroad, such as telling the way, helping the policemen with the traffic. Trivial as they sound, I believe it is also a way to make contribution to our nation’s scientific development.

In this age of financial crisis, when the future of the world is covered with the cobwebs of uncertainty and risks, we need hold faster to our belief in scientific development. Because history has its lesson taught to us, temporary prosperity can bring us nothing but deceiving illusion and fascinating bubbles, only full consideration and scientific development can bring human beings into sustainable peace and harmony.

As Plato says, “this City is what it is because our citizens are what they are. So my friends, this nation is what it is because we are what we do, let us take action now, and let us hope for the best!

Thank you

Applying the Scientific Outlook on Development to the Self-improvement of College Students

The world today is undergoing extensive and profound changes and the contemporary China is going through a wide-ranging and deep-going transformation into a superpower with a promising future. There’s no doubt that this brings us unprecedented opportunities as well as unprecedented challenges, with the former outweighing the latter. Starting from this new historical point, the Chinese government proposes the scientific outlook on development in the light of the thorough analysis of China’s own practice and experience during the past decades. However, here come the questions that what we college students can learn from this new concept and what we’re supposed to do under the guidance of it.

First of all, let’s focus on the connotation of the viewpoint of scientific development. The scientific outlook on development takes development as its essence, putting people first as its core, comprehensive, balanced and sustainable development as its basic requirement and overall consideration as its fundamental approach. We’re required to better implement strategy of strengthening the nation with trained personnel and the strategy of sustainable development, make innovations of our thinking and raise quality and efficiency to achieve sound and rapid development.

Then comes the question that what exactly we college students can derive from this new concept, or rather, how we can relate the essence of this viewpoint to our life and our studies. Personally speaking, the scientific outlook on development does help us to change our attitudes towards our own individual development to some extent, the ways to make our self-improvement and the outlook on our own future careers. Then I would like to focus on three aspects to illustrate my point of view.

First, as the younger generation in the twenty-first century, we’re expected to gain that kind of education for personal all-round development and that refers to the moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetics and labor education. Unfortunately, the education system in China nowadays is far from satisfactory. It’s still quite common to see a large number of students constantly suffer a lot from the examination-oriented education. Grades and marks are much emphasized and therefore the comprehensive development of each student has always been seriously ignored. It seems that we can’t make a fundamental change to the present education system. But there’s still something we can improve through our own efforts. According to the scientific outlook on development, we should arm ourselves with knowledge in different fields and also some important personal qualities, such as the ability to speak, write and organize, sense of responsibility and determination, team work spirit, leadership, interpersonal communication skills. Only in this way can we make the most of our talents and potential in order to make better contributions to our country.

Second, it does in some way update the opinions of those graduates towards their choices of future careers. There’s no denying that graduates today have been confronted with the harsh reality. Stiff competition is everywhere and landing a decent job seems to be a lot more difficult than ever. Some of the graduates, especially those from prestigious universities, are sometimes totally at a loss as to why they fail to stand out among all the competitors in the job market after years of relentless hard work. As far as I’m concerned, what is behind this phenomenon is the lack of proper judgment of themselves and their personal development in the future. Not everybody is competent for the positions with high salary and social standing. Broadening their job search and considering working in grassroots communities still remain to be the sensible alternatives for those young people who aspire to live their lives to the fullest by setting up a prosperous career. So here we can see the change in their state of mind is actually based on the full comprehension of the scientific outlook on development. This new concept is to a large degree invested with practical significance for our college students.

Last but not the least, I’d like to talk about the tremendous impact it will exert on our ways to see the everyday life. Life is not always easy and it can be a very hard road to travel sometime. Situations beyond our influence or control can devastate the strongest individual. Many of us have moments when we feel as if life, the world, and almost everything around them move forward, while we ourselves stand still. We experience failures and frustrations. But it’s quite necessary for us to see those unpleasant situations in a proper perspective. Failures are not only unavoidable, but also essential to success. Every failure teaches us something, without which we’d never be able to embark on the next step to success. In this way, every failure gets us nearer to perfection. So a failure is essentially an opportunity and can be put to practical use, if only we have the right mindset to treat it as such. So here we’re required to think in a different way and try to look at the issue from different angles.

To summarize, the scientific outlook on development can really help us to make a better understanding of ourselves and our own life. The significance of this concept can not only be perceived in the political and economic areas, but also the situation that college students have to face today. It makes sense to fully comprehend what it’s all about and how to apply it to our own self-improvement.

Practicing the scientific development, flying the dreams of youth

Three years ago, the first time I stepped into UIBE, I can feel the unlimited freedom aura and the great fashion of college students and also their hurried way of walking. They live so beautifully and confidently. Just like everybody knew what they want and were striking hard for them. And for so long, I keep thinking about what I want to realize in college, is it to own a bunch of good friends, an extraordinary academic performance, or an excellent record in my resume? No answers.

Getting through those activities and various courses I took part in, I kept myself busy running around and tried to grab something meaningful, and to find my answers, however leaving my life in a mass, little by little. I felt fearful and was even at a loss what to do next and can’t see clearly what college life means on earth, until one day, a union came into my life.

I became one of the backbone members of Youth Volunteers’ Corps. It resembles the big red heart forming by a lot of organizers’ hearts and aroused enormous transitions on me. From the designing of our union flag, to the making of badge logo, from the establishment of the institution, to the recruitment of new members, then to the trip going outside school to get sponsorship, all of us were advertising the volunteerism that “we can not merely take, but we must give as well”. We try to build a union that can last long and benefit a lot. If the corps was a huge building, we were the architects and designers. We have to decide what can be done and what can’t be. In all the decisions we have made, we have always tried to do what was best for our fellow members, our corps and our service objects.

Everything we do is people-oriented, is trying to coordinate different sources and personnel to achieve a long lasting corps with sustainable development. Time after time we’ve responded to the challenges we have faced. Time after time, the Youth Volunteers’ Corps has shown a firm resolve and an unshakable faith in our union’s future!

At present, after 2 years long with the Youth Volunteers’ Corps, I have found my answers. Growing up, like anything worth having, requires effort, effort to learn about and get involved in some of the big ideas of our time. The Youth Volunteers’ Corps has taught me how to look upon stuffs with the scientific view and to treat problems in sustainable profound way. I feel so lucky that I accidentally ran into the inspiration and the soul of our era, that is, the scientific development.

Not long ago, I believed in my motto from Bill Clinton, “If you work hard and play by the rules you should be given a chance to go as far as your God-given ability will take you.”

However, now I have known it demands more than that. In front of obstacles, we might have felt fearful and nervous. In front of complicated world, we might have found ourselves at a loss. But now my firm belief is that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself—nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.

As long as we deal with it with sustainable view and aim at the people-oriented, we will be able to find way out, no matter how hard it is. Under its guidance we, the new generation, can grow up rapidly in the process of organizing our brain. Under its guidance, we, the future backbone of our society, can transform the troughs our nation is facing into a beautiful symphony of prosperity. We have the faith that, in the youth generation’s flying future; the glow of China’s booming will finally light the world stage!

Thank you!

We Post-80s

Ladies and gentleman, good evening. It is a great honor for me to stand here and share my view with you. My topic today is “We Post-80s,”

When facing the word “Post-80s”, what is your feeling? Look at these words: Rebellion, Self-centered, Arrogance, Selfishness, all of which are entitled to the generation of post-80s.Are they fair description of the “Post-80s”? No, definitely not!

Before we talk about the “Post-80s,” let’s take a look at the generation of “ex-80s” who is taking the lead in the current society. They are diligent, studious and traditional. They spent all their life in building up a well-off and prosperous society which we enjoy today. They are respectable because it is them who bring the once poor and weak China on the road of recovery. Considering the efforts they’ve made and the pains they’ve taken, they hope their children can take the road that they regard right and can become self-disciplinary.

But it seems that their children have let them down. As a new generation, the “post-80s” meet the tide of “Reform and Opening Up”, in which all kinds of new ideas and methodology flush into our homeland. Facing this cultural conflictthe post-80s have to make many choices even when they haven’t had a self-judgment standard. This is the cultural context for the characteristics of post-80s. Within this context, they integrate all the ideas to form their pop culture, which sometimes shock the society.

Several cases in point are identified as follows: Hanhan, the author of “San Chongmen”, despises Chinese educational system very much and wrote a lot of articles to display his contempt; tens of millions of crazy super star-fans, addiction to internet. These phenomena all deepen the ex-80s’ worry.

But gradually, the ex-80s and other people who hold prejudice against our post-80s will find that their worry is not necessary. Maybe the more appropriate words to describe our post-80s are courageous and creative. Our post-80s are courageous enough to challenge the past classics, to state our own ideas and thoughts. Even as for the 70s’ most worried task of the price of an apartment , we are not so concernedand say; I would go abroad to set up my career by using this 1million instead of buying a flat!

My dear friends, maybe you will think that the above words are our self-defense and excuses. Please look at these pictures.( Pictures extracted from the Massive Earthquake on May 12th, 2008)

In the earth-quake relieving work, we post-80s emerges. Whereever we are, we exhibit the beauty of youth: Donate blood , organizing the donation activities for the victims, voluntarily went to the attacked areas with relieving equipment and materials in spite of personal safety. So many representatives of our post-80s selflessly contribute our efforts to help the victims, we use our actions to form a slogan: Come on China!

My Dear friends, after the discussion , you will realize that we, post-80s, like all little brothers and sisters, we will commit mistakes particular to youth, We sometimes will conduct somewhat rebellious behaviors but don’t worry about us , because we will never forget the dignity and integrity of our nation, We will never forget the responsibilities we should take.

I believe that, in the future, in the near future, we our post-80s will have the same smile as the ex-80s did before, when the post-90s and 00s have grown mature. Thanks for your attention.

What do you need, our motherland

Good evening everyone, my honored teachers and my fellow studentsMy name is lvtianjiao, major in insurance. Today I am so glad to stand here sharing some of my personal opinion with you . Well first of all please allow me to show my topic ,my topic today is What do you need, our motherland

When we were kids ,we were often told to study hard and to be a useful to our motherland in the future .But have you ever wondered what kind of person is useful to our nation? What does our motherland exactly need

Throughout the world, with the globalization of the economy, every country, no matter big or small, rich or poor, has been bond up with each other as a whole . As the biggest developing country in the world, China can’t be an outsider, on the contrary china is now playing an extremely important role in the different international affairs. For confronting the big opportunity and challenge during the past thirty years Chinese people have firmly and unswervingly follow the path of reform and opening-up. We have built a relatively complete industrial structure and national economic framework, raising the levels of our cultural and material lives significantly. We are now confidently taking the road to the future, the road of socialism with Chinese characteristics. At this moment, when we are about to step into the new age, President Hu Jingtao represented our Party put forward a great guiding policy that “Scientific Outlook on Development.” so under the new condition what kind of qualities do we have to possess and How does the scientific development impact on us are two questions worthy of consideration.

It is sure that we are a group of youth with promising future. Like Martin Luther King we also have a dream that we could devote our sweat and blood, our wisdom and passion, to the historic cause of making our nation a greater and happier land for every one of us. However if we don’t know what does society actually need, how could we make a right decision to meet social demand. Therefore, after a long time thinking I drew a preliminary conclusion for you.

First the basic need of our motherland is development .In fact the key of development is professional talents . Since China has been integrated into the global market, different kinds of industries are eager to obtain someone with professional knowledge and real vision to lead them compete for foreign market. However it is not easy to become a professional, Rome was not built in a day. The moment we make up our decision we should have the prevision that we will devote the rest of our life to pursue the career we choose. It needs a lifetime, as a great person ever said “what we kwon is nothing what we don’t kwon is immense.” So youth must stamp out impatience and swagger, Like Qian xuesen Wangxuan and all the great people we should put our heart in what we learn , keep pushing for professional standard in our major .

The development of china can’t be isolated from the world, retreating behind our borders would only invite danger. For the sake of that our modern college student are expected to be more concerned about international situation and possess the quality of international view. Studying from a international and diversified perspective you would be clear about where we are now and where we will be in the future .in other words international view could make us wise to deal with the relationship among individuals nations and the world. After that we will have a right direction to go forth for security and prosperity of our nation.

Innovation sustains the progress of a nation. It is an inexhaustible motive force for the prosperity of a country .In the resent year Words like individuality and creativity are getting more emphasis and more people are rewarded for their hard work and efforts. As the most active generation we should have more courage to break down the old conventions. Don’t be afraid of anything new, and use our intelligence to make our nation full of vitality, constantly grow and renew itself.

Campus life is the most splendid period in one life but at same time is the shortest period too. We still have lots of to learn. The students who cherish their beautiful season and cherish the hope, that one day will become outstanding. The person who just wastes his time in eating, drinking or playing cards finally will eliminate from the society.

American President Tomas Jefferson once wrote “I like the dream of future better than the history of the past”

In the past fifty years we have faced the danger and trial and there is more ahead. Now the world watches, the world listens, and the world is waiting to see where this nation will be heading in a time of rich opportunities and fierce competition.
We are a generation with a clear perception of our historical responsibility. Since we have know what do our motherland need We are not going to evade that responsibility. We are not going to let people down. And people, far and near, will hear of us, So let us go forth, my fellow members of this luckily chosen generation, and meet the new century in victory and glory.51-mm

Be ye man of valor

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Today I’d like share with you some of my thoughts on the topic of be ye man of valor.

Nowadays there often a discussion on topic of what are the qualifications for a good youth of today? We are living a rapidly advancing era. The explosion of population in limited space makes people compete to survive. For it is a great not only for we college students but also for the generation.

Being a young Chinese we cam not ignore the adversities we have to face and to overcome. Challenges come in front of us, should we only wait and see, or face to it as those great people had done?

We want to know, what is the secret ingredient of great people that enable them to be successful? Why they survive the tough times when others are overcome by them? Why do they continue when others give up? Why do they soar when others sink?

The answer can be very simple. It’s all in how we perceive our problems. Yes, every living person has problems. A problem-free life is an illusion—a mirage in the desert. Every mountain has a peak. Every valley has its low point. Life has its ups and downs, its peak and its valleys. No one is up all the time, nor are they down all the time. If we do end the problems, they are all resolved in time.

We may not be able to control the times, but we can compose our response.

As for the final analysis, I wish we were all more thorough students of the might past, for we should thus be rendered braver prophets of the future. If then a practical end must be assigned to a university life, as far as I’m concerned that is the art of social life, and its end is fitness for the outside world. It shows us how to accommodate ourselves to others, how to throw us into their state of mind, how to bring before them our own. To deal with it, the key point is to have a right concept of acquiring knowledge. We study in order to serve, for the progress of our society and the welfare of our nation. That’s why we have to have a right concept of study and life.

Just as the old saying come from the England, be ye man of valor and good bless for the future.

Development in heart, scientific outlook in mind

When our country is in the middle of an unprecedented global financial crisis, what’s on your mind, my friends?

Are you worried about the unemployment rate or are you complaining that life isn’t fair because you have to walk out of campus when the job market is so gloomy? Exactly, how should we view the financial crisis and deal with it?

While the scientific outlook on development has been once again put on the agenda of CPC and NPCC in the face of the crisis, maybe we can also get some inspirations from it.

To begin with, let’s look at what indeed is scientific outlook on development. According to the Party Constitution, development is its essence along with comprehensive, balanced and sustainable development as its basic requirement and overall consideration as its fundamental approach.

As far as I’m concerned, it requires us to focus on our development. But what are the guidelines?

Firstly, overall consideration makes it necessary to connect our own interests with our country’s needs. President Hu Jingtao once said, university students are precious human resources to our country. As university students, the future of China rests on the shoulders of us. Therefore, besides study, we need to keep abreast of current affairs, to always care about the future of our country and to realize our personal values in contributing to our country. “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” The former US president, John F Kennedy once said. In the case of the financial crisis, we shouldn’t just complain that life is unfair and wait for the government’s rescue. Instead, we should think of ways to improve our abilities to adapt to the changes and contribute to the recovery of the economy.

Despite the financial crisis, our country also has many other severe problems. Environmental protection, aging population, lack of resources, widening gap between rich and poor as well as unsound economic structure and many other problems are all restricting the future development of our country. It is not only the government’s duty to deal with them. We can also make a difference and help solve these problems. Only when these problems have been solved, can the great rejuvenation of our nation be accomplished.

Secondly, the outlook requires us to consider development both in the short term and in the long run.

In Chinese, crisis means both danger and opportunity. When we look at the danger we are facing now, we may as well predict opportunities for us when the economy recovers. When everyone is escaping from the finance major as the finance sector is heavily stricken by the crisis, a senior student told me that she wanted to go abroad and learn financial engineering. For some, this may not be a wise decision. However, I believe she has made the right choice. For one thing, the Chinese financial system is not materially affected and the ongoing financial reform of China will need lots of talents with finance knowledge. For another thing, just because something went wrong with the global financial system does not mean we should ignore it, but rather, we should find ways to improve the system and prevent the crisis from happening again.

And this brings us to a further question, what can we do to promote our personal development in university?

Once again, the scientific outlook on development offers suggestions.

On the one hand, overall consideration also means to develop a scientific way of thinking. There are quite a few methods for this. Take myself for an example, I found myself thinking in a more logical way after learning Advanced Mathematics. Also, it is important to understand that scientific outlook on development does not necessarily mean natural sciences. Studying Marxism and engaging in scientific research projects on humanities can also be very helpful.

On the other hand, comprehensive, balanced and sustainable development requires us to develop ourselves in an all-round way. It’s true that a student’s main task is to study. So we must study hard and gain the most possible from classes and books. However, we should never become nerds. Getting involved in all kinds of extracurricular activities will develop our abilities and sharpen our minds. Furthermore, learning to be is always important than learning to do. A good personality that we develop in campus can benefit us in a lifetime. These valuable things we learn at school will make us a better person and live life to its fullest.

It is the worst of the times, it is the best of the times, it is the winter of despair, it is the spring of hope. And scientific outlook on development will be the time machine transferring us to our ideal destinations.

Live for the rise of china

Good evening, honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen. Today my topic islive for the rise of China.

A hundred years ago, in a small classroom of SHENYANG primary school. A teacher asked his students a question “what is the intention of you studying today?” Some said they wanted to be officials and wielded great power; while others said they’d like to make lots of money and to live a wealthy life. Suddenly, there rose a different voice, a boy stood up and answered “I’m studying for the rise of China.”

I believe everybody here is familiar with this story. The boy’s name was Zhou En Lai. At that time he was only 13 years old, and 4 decades later he became the premier of People Republic of China, and stood in the forefront of the world stage.

I admire this great man not only for his great achievements, but also impressed by his great words “study for the rise of China”. Different people have different aims for the future, so I wondered if that question was given to us, what will be our answer. For this, I have done a survey, and used a questionnaire to find out the attitude from my friends and schoolmates. According to the data I collected, 27% of them do not have exact ideals for the future. And 22% believe they study for their father and mother, the reason is quite simple “I don’t want to be a burden (or a heavy load) of my family!” While only 18% of them expressed their desire for contributions to our nation..

How disappointing! When life is better and safer, we think less and lose our bearing. WhyWhy do we abandon the lofty ideals and turn short-sighted to tomorrow? Why we usually feel gloomy and depressive about daily life? Why do we only care about present enjoyment and ignore our future? And what should be our intention for the future?

J. Ruskin once said living without a target is like sailing without a compass. If our beloved premier had just cared for his own benefit, would he have realized the responsibility for national independence and liberation? Or if he had that ideal but have had given it up half way, would he have devoted all his life to fighting for the democracy and freedom of his people? The answer is absolutely “No”. It is the lofty intention and unremitting perseverance that made him a great man.

In the 21centure, new challenges are coming to us. We have to face the problems caused by financial crisis and international trade disputes. We are deadly expected to live for the rise of China. Now we are focusing on Scientific Outlook on development, and we are willing to build a well-off society in an all-around way. And so, we should be more concerned for the future of our motherland.

As a university student, my goal is to study for excellence in my major field and to get fitness to our society. But at the same time, I have a belief deeply rooted in my mind. That one day, Chinese people are living a better and happier life by their hard work. One day, our motherland can soar proudly in the family of nations. One day, we will realize a great rejuvenation of China by the knowledge from our study. One day, we will not only admire those great names, but be one of them. One day, we will face to the whole world gloriously and say “I’m proud of being a Chinese!”

Ways that belong to us

Good afternoon!

Ladies and Gentlemen, honorable judges and distinguished guests:

It’s already the second semester in my junior year. How time flies! Well, friends around me stop talking about foods and clothes, the very topic turns to be “what are you going to do after you graduate ”.Frankly, I have been tortured by this question since the last winter holiday and after the passing three months, I still can not figure out what suits me best.

Seeking for a job right after graduation? I doubt if there will be any available for me confronting such a financial turbulence. Then how about going aboard? Getting scholarship can be really a problem and I don’t think I can handle that much study in a language besides my mother tongue. Then here leaves the only way to go: attend the National Graduate Admission Test and scratch a master’s degree! But I am still not sure if this is what I want.

Why am I so struggled at this problem? Obviously, I am not the only one like this. And it’s undisputed a fact that quite a number of college students feel lost when making choices about their future development. Ladies and gentlemen, apparently this is what we urgently need to discuss and resolve today: Ways that belong to us.

When talking about the so called ‘Scientific Outlook on Development’ as an imperatively important guideline for the country’s future development, I think it also applies pretty well to us as college students. As we all know, the ‘Scientific Outlook on Development’ takes development as its essence, putting people first as its core, comprehensive, balanced and sustainable development as its basic requirement, and overall consideration as its fundamental approach.

Nobody can finish their university life as a bookworm and still end up performing excellently in their job interviews. Nobody can confidently enter the fierce job market without professional skills in a certain field. Once we step into the gate of the university, we are developing ourselves so as to prepare to be a social person. Not only should we keep in mind to cumulate as much information as we can, but also we need to involve ourselves in as much interactions with others as possible. Only after this four-year-process of experiences will we build up ourselves as comprehensive and balanced.

Still, we could not ignore that there are some people they know where they are going and what they must do to get there. They know where they will stand five years even ten years in the future. And this is what we emphasize as ‘sustainable’. We need to understand we are not just making a living, but living a life. And we are not just looking for a job, but searching for a career that’s worth for pursuing for our whole lives.

However, ladies and gentlemen, all covet all lose.

We could not pick up everything we want like the greedy monkey and find nothing in hand at last. Everybody needs some sorts of things which could distinguish themselves from others. If you are those who love theory research, go ahead and emerge yourselves in your study and even one day grab a PHD. And if you are those who love and are good at communication and interaction with others, don’t force yourselves for the pursuit of high marks in class, but keep a balanced study timetable and take part in as much meaningful social activities and competition as you can. All-around but still get focal point, and this is what it really mean by ‘overall consideration’.

Today, I am not standing here promoting something concerning politics but sincerely cherish the hope that all of us can find ways that belong to us. With the application of Scientific Outlook on Development as our guiding light for future roads, I strongly believe that there will be no hesitation, no confusion facing this multiple choice once again.

Thank you!

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen !

Today my topic is:

We are not problems

----of the education in scientific development

First I’d like to release a piece of news that there’s another suicide in UIBE just now, how do you feel? Ok, it’s just a little test, but it shows suicide is not so unbelievable as years before. Too many cases about suicides in universities have been reported recently. One case concerns a couple of Communication University of China, who committed suicide just because of breaking up. People are always talking about the problem of college students, it seems as if the higher academic qualification people get, the more chances they commit suicides. You may wonder where the reason of it lies, just as I do.

Let us get down to the fundamentals and agree that our Chinese students get the highest marks in the world, but the least education about EQ. We often talk about it but what is EQ? EQ short for Emotional Intelligence Quotient, is a term that describes the ability, capacity, skill or a self-perceived ability, to identify, assess, and manage the emotions of one's self, of others, and of groups. Our Chinese students are generally regarded smart, then the students of Pecking and Tinghua university are smarter ones. But we often hear that some master or doctor has jumped into the unnamed lake to end the unbearable pressure, I don’t know how attractive the bottom is that it can be so many high IQs’ last choices. Maybe because we have high IQ and low EQ: and that is where the rub is.

I think we have to admit that the education in western countries puts more importance on scientific outlook than us. Scientific outlook, whose goal is to make students develop in an all- round way. Westerners teach the students how to face failures in life since they were very young. They give the students courage to deal with their life problems by themselves, as well as the ability to communicate with others to get help. While our Chinese teachers and parents often praise their children for high marks and high IQs. Maybe that’s the very difference that makes the problem about edcation in China.

I’ve seen some of you have shown disagreeable expressions. Now I want to ask “how often do you feel confused and complain about life?” Needless to say, most of you may answer “too often”. Yes, it’s common to get frustrated in this high-pace, high-pressure and high-competitive society, but it matters how you deal with it. Let’s take a look around the world, American and Hongkong students will turn for help when they get trapped, and they prefer teamwork. While some Chinese students tend to handle it all by themselves because of the so-called conservative characters, though it leads to less communication, more stress and even suicides at last. Not only Chinese, but also koreans have thus problems where the suicide rate is about 3.4%, highest in the world.

Yes, we need communication as well as we need air and water. Now please stop your work in hand and just think about how long ago it was when you said “I love you” to your parents; when you spoke out the words buried deeply in your heart to your best friend; when you just cried out your stress loudly without misgivings… It may show we are becoming problems now,but do we college students really want to become problems of our society? Definitely not!

So what can we do? How could we college students grow healthily and pay back to our society ?

That’s a question now we should take serious consideration. Here I have three hearts to answer this question, the first and foremost; we should build up a balanced heart, which can help us out when we lost ourselves in failure. Secondly, we ought to have a responsible heart, which can remind us of our old parents when we think of suicides. The last but not the least, we need a grateful heart, which can make us feel love surrounding us all the time. This is quite easy to understand, in a word, we should pay more attention to our EQ as much as IQ, as many experts put it, EQ outweighs IQ in one’s way to success.

In summary, to get high EQ is quite simple, as long as we have courage to face difficulties, have the awareness to communication, have the three hearts committed in mind. Then we can all succeed and pay back to society someday. Finally please allow me to represent all the college students to declare that we are not problems, we are the future and hope of our parents, of our society, of our nation! Just have a little faith in us!

That’s all !

Thank you !

Do not abandon, do not give up

Wang Baoqiang, 25 years old, was born in a small village in Hebei province. When he was five, he saw the classic film-“Shaolin Temple”, and from that moment, he set up his goal. He wanted to be an actor. At the age of 8, baoqiang got on the train to Shaolin Temple. Without parents being around, little baoqiang learned to live all alone. Though life is tough, he insisted. Because he thought that every day’s practicing Martial Arts was a process of shooting films, but 6 years passed, noting happened. Many people persuaded baoqiang to forget about film. They said he should be a farmer. They told him that is the way for him. But baoqiang knew what he wanted. To pursue his dream, he joined the army of “Bei piao”, becoming one of the countless aspiring actors waiting anxiously at the gate of the Beijing Film Studio for a chance at stardom. Another two years of waiting, and waiting. In these two years, baoqiang was moving bricks at construction sites. Without skills, all he could do was heavy labor. He made 25 yuan each day. He can barely feed himself. But day after day, he still waited beyond the gate of Beijing film studio. He never forgot his dream. The reason of working at construction sites was to become an actor. Now he has succeeded. He realized his dreams. Doesn’t he just like Xu Sanduo in “Soldier sorties”? Sanduo holds a simple belief- doing meaningful things. He perseveres in his belief. Even when his father, his friends, almost everyone around him loses confidence in him, he never stops trying. “Do not abandon, do not give up”, that is what he does.

Many people are just like the farmer who waits by a tree for a rabbit popping up itself. Lots of people are drifting in the wind forgetting what his dream was. Now I want all of you to ask yourself two questions. How many of us can say aloud that we are still perusing our dreams? How many of us can persevere in our original choices when facing crossroads? Wang Baoqiang is always moving forward, while others are just looking forward.

So, what should we do? How can we be the best of ourselves and make contributions to our motherland? Scientific Outlook on Development emphasizes the all-round development of people. That means besides a healthy body, we have to temper our will, learn to be persistent, and aim properly. As college students, the first step is to know what direction you want to head for. Bearing that in mind, the next step for you is to go for it.

We need dreams. They give us a vision of a better future. They nourish our spirit; they represent possibility even then we are dragged down by reality. But all of our dreams are of no value unless they are followed by action. Today will not wait. Success will not wait. Waiting is never the start of attaining any dreams. We all see fireflies. We love their lights. They are the little shining stars even in the darkest forests. But fireflies give off light only when they are on the wing, only when they are in action. Let us all be fireflies. Let us act at once. Let us persevere in dreams. Then our light will brighten the world.

Please do not doubt your ability in achieving a goal. In fact, everyone has his special ingredient of success. All you have to do is to believe it. Like what is said in “Kung Fu Panda”: To make something special, you just have to believe it’s special.

In the end I want repeat the famous lines from the TV series “Soldier sorties”: Do meaningful things, do not abandon, do not give up.

Youth, You Make the New Age

Ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon. I’m glad to stand here today and give you a speech. Facing this audience on the stage, I have the exciting feeling of participating in the march of history, for what we are facing today is more than a mere competition or contest. It is an assembly of some of the most talented and motivated students, representatives of a younger generation that are preparing themselves for the coming of a new age.

I'm grateful that I've been given this opportunity. Today here, I’d like to share an unforgettable experience with you. Before going to the university, during the summer holiday, with my father, I visited Sichuan province, which was suffered that catastrophic earth quake last year. The disaster has become a permanent pain in people’s hearts. So many people lost their lives in a flash, so many happy families became destitute and homeless far and near, so many buildings collapsed without any hesitate. There I met a senior high school student, who survived in the earth quake only with his younger sister. No parents, no house, no money, the 17-year-old boy didn’t lose his heart anymore. He said to me, “I’m now working hard to prepare for the college entrance examination. I also desire to come to Beijing to go to the college. After graduation, I’d like to go back to Sichuan to help contribute my hometown.” He stressed that’s his responsibility to his dead parents, his sister, his hometown and this nation.

Now I still remember there were full of hopes in that boy’s eyes. And also I remember during that miserable period, thousands of youth came forward to be the volunteers. Some even descended upon the worst-hit areas. The youth, have been aware of the responsibility on their shoulders and put it in practice.

I was deeply shocked by that incident. As my father expected, I entered the college and began to understand responsibility and to learn to always do my duties faithfully and devotedly. It makes my heart satisfied to think that I have always done everything in my power to fulfill my responsibilities as best I can.

I also began to perceive the changes taking place around me. New buildings, new commodities and new fashions appear every day. New ideas, new information, and new technologies appear every minute. Words like individuality and creativity are getting more emphasis and society is becoming more competitive. Such is the age in which this generation, grows and matures. Such is the age in which this generation will take over the nation from our fathers and learn to run it. Yet in the meantime, many problems still exist.

We learn that crimes take place in broad daylight with crowds of people looking on and not assisting. We hear that there are still about 1 million children in this country who can't even afford to go to primary schools.

We buy shoddy medicines, since money, many people believe, is the most important thing in the world that must be made, even at the expense of morality and responsibility.

Such an age, furthermore, demands, that we are a generation with a clear perception of our historical responsibility and will take action to solve the problems. History has long been preparing these qualities in this generation and it is now calling us forward to give testimony to our patriotism and heroism towards this nation and all humanity.

Standing here now, I think of the past 20 years of my life as an ordinary student. Probably I'll be an ordinary person for the rest of my life. But this doesn't discourage me any, for I know that with my sense of responsibility and devoted efforts to always strive, for the best, it's going to be a meaningful and worthwhile life that I will be living.

Standing here now, I think of the past 30 years of this nation, which has achieved greatness that inspired millions of people of my age. We know that the world watches, the world listens, the world is waiting to see where this nation will be heading in a time of rich opportunities and fierce competition.

I can't ever forget that boy’s eyes with full hopes. I felt the hopes. It is the sacred responsibility of this generation to face up to the challenges of the new age and to devote our sweat and blood, our wisdom and passion, to the historic cause of making this nation a greater and happier land for every one of us.

We are not going to evade that responsibility. We are not going to let people down. And people, far and near, will hear of us. Frost will be brought to their backbones and tears to their eyes when our stories are told and retold. So let us go forth, my fellow members of this luckily chosen generation, and meet the new age in victory and glory.
