In one classroom, the students are trying hard to keep their eyes from wandering during an endless lecture. In the next room, students go from debating with the “lecturer” about the significance of the Qing Dynasty to applauding.

Both classes were held at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE). The former was a fairly standard, formal lecture. In the latter, a student had assumed the role of a lecturer as part of “Youth Lecture” series organized by students to let them cover particular cultural or historical topics they especially like. It’s open to the public.

According to Zhao Ruifang, a Shandong Institute of Business and Technology professor, less than 17 percent of students question the teacher’s authority. But if the person up there on the dais is one of them- that’s a different story altogether.

“It’s really different from a lecture given by professors,” said Liu Chao, an economics major. “You dare to question and express your own ideas.”

Zhao concluded that students do have a sense of innovation, but lack initiative and confidence. Wu Qingfeng, a junior English major at Shanghai International Studies University, sees it another way: “It’s not always students who are to blame for this. When a teacher starts reading from a book, with no change in tone for hours, students lose interest.”

Some “Youth Lecture” audience members say the series gives them both knowledge and encouragement: “I do think critically about a topic during the lecture and develop my own views,” said Li Wenwei, a senior. “I also have a chance to express myself and learn from others’ perspectives.”

Liu Teng, who has lectured for the series, thinks he also benefit from it. “I have to prepare my topic and materials well for the lecture, and I gain better understanding up there,” Liu said.

“Youth Lecture” is an experiment to get students more actively involved in their studies, according to Xu Song, the chief secretary of the UIBE Youth League. Yet there is no denying that many teachers are trying to make their classes more interesting and interactive.
